After Toronto, the city of Edmonton is Canada’s
second most populous provincial capital. Edmonton is the most northerly
city in North America that has a population of over one million and yet
is known for being the sunniest cities in Canada. Besides being known
for having more parkland than any other city in North America, Edmonton
is a unique cultural center and is known the world over as ‘The Festival City.’
Edmonton is located in a lush river valley and has one of the longest
stretches of urban parkland in North America and has more parkland than
any Canadian city. Edmonton travel is increasing at a tremendous pace as
tourists are discovering that the valley offers a relaxing and beautiful
way to escape urban life. After all, there are parks in Edmonton that
range from urban parks nearer to the central city to parks that have a
plethora of wilderness campsites.
With over 27,000 acres of parkland, anyone considering Edmonton travel
will want to experience at least some of Edmonton’s
twenty two parks along the river valley park system. There are eleven
blue lakes to row canoes or rent boats. Fourteen scenic ravines and
other unique natural landscapes gives Edmonton a reputation for having
some of the best bike, hiking and walking trails in the world. Also
located in the river valley are a few public and private golf courses.
Of course, Canada and Edmonton has consistently long winters and the
green golf courses transform in winter time to delight cross-country
skiers and skaters. There are four downhill slopes for skiers both in
and outside the city.
Moreover, anyone interested in Edmonton travel should know that ‘The Festival City’ hosts huge festivals every year at Downtown Edmonton or Churchill
Square. For instance, one of the most famous festivals is ‘The Works Art & Design Festival,’ which showcases Canadian and International art from award winning
artists and designers, as well as student artists. Performance artists
from around the world flock to the ‘Edmonton
International Performer’s Festival.’ One of the most unique and interesting festivals is called ‘Capital Ex,’ and activities include chuck wagon races, music, fireworks and carnival
rides. The rodeo has international prestige and is second only to the
National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Anyone interested in Edmonton travel will not want to miss the
outstanding park system running through and well beyond Edmonton’s
city limits nor leave without experiencing at least one of the festivals
that keeps the city cool in summer and warm in winter. Edmonton’s
best asset, nevertheless, are its diverse and happy people. |
